Weekly Report #1 - 屋根裏のベクトル束

はじめに

私は復習が嫌いで、勉強してもやりっぱなしで全然身につかないので、一週間に学んだことの一部をブログでアウトプットすることにしました。自分の備忘録としてのアウトプットなので、ジャンルもフォーマットもバラバラになると思います。何か間違いがあったら、ぜひ教えてください。

とりあえず試しに英会話の振り返りだけ

From his point of view
From his perspective
- 例：彼個人的には受け入れたいけど、マネージャーという立場的にそれを受け入れるわけにはいかない。
- e.g. From his personal perspective of view, he would accept her idea but considering his position as a manager, he couldn't accept it.

glass ceiling
- e.g. The company has a glass ceiling that prevents female staff from being promoted.

自分の知らない分野の話を聞いて理解できなかった時、ものすごい劣等感に苛まれる。特に、それが当然知っているべきことであればなおさらだ。
- When I hear something unfamiliar field, I feel tremendous inferior that I don't know about it. This is especially true when it isn't a specialized subject, but something that we should know.
  - 「知ってて当然」とか、take it for granted that...って繋げたくなるけど、普通にsomething that we should know でも良い
  - tremendousの類語
    - enormous, incredible 使える。

know about（〜に関することを、調べたりみたことがあって）知ってる
know of（風の噂程度に、名前だけなら）知っている
何でもかんでも理解しようとしすぎだよ。中途半端になるよ。
- I'm trying to learn too many things. If I go on like this, I'll be a mediocre.
  - mediocre: 二流の、平凡以下の
  - cf. It was mediocre.
    - 可もなく不可もなくだね。

カナダの精神科医、エリックバーンの言葉：
You cannot change others or the past, but you can change yourself and the future.

英語が話せるっていうのは、建設的な議論ができて、相手の考えを理解して自分の意見を正確に伝えられる能力を言うのであって、英語で道案内ができるとかそういうことじゃない。
- Being able to use English means the ability to have constructive discussions, understand what others think and express what I think accurately, not a skill to give directions in English or anything like that.

いっぺんに全部を変えようとすると、多分失敗する
- If you try to change everything all at once, you will certainly fail. Change must happen gradually.
〜に耳を傾けようとする、喜んで聴く
- be receptive to
  - e.g: They are receptive to new ideas and feedbacks.
意見を求めるとき
- I'll ask them for their two cents.
my way or the highway
- 「嫌なら出ていけ」みたいなニュアンス
過去にすがりついている
- They are living in the past glory.
- They are stuck in the glory days.

the cookie crumbles
- 「世の中ってそんなもんさ」みたいなイメージ。BIGMAMAの代表曲のタイトル。
- 例：社会人はそんなもんだって、現実を諦めて受け入れている人もいる。（←こんな感じで使うのかな？）
  - Some people accept reality as "that's the way the cookie crumbles." Going against the flow will waste your energy.

tedious
- e.g: I have to do this simple task every day, it's so tedious.
cf. I can't be bothered.
- これは「めんどくさくて不愉快、それをやる気も全然ない」というニュアンス
  - "It's a hassle."は「手間がかかって面倒くさい」行為に対して。
  - ”It’s a pain in the neck.”でもめんどくさいニュアンスを出せる。

優しさと無関心は紙一重だと思う。
- I would say there is a fine line between kindness and indifference.
- There is not much difference between kindness and indifference.
AとBの間で板挟みに合う
- I find myself caught in the middle of A and B.
無責任：irresponsible
- She is so irresponsible.
- 「（できないくせに叶うとか、）無責任なこと言うなよ！」みたいなときは"Don't give them the wrong idea."（誤解を与えるようなこと言わないで）と一緒に使うと良さそう。
関係ない：nothing to do with
- He has nothing to do with Ken's life, so he is a bit irresponsible.
- cf. 「関係ない、関わりたくない」みたいな拒絶系の「関係ない」は、not one's business.
  - e.g: It's not my business.

「環境に恵まれている」
- I'm in a very privileged environment to be able to work here.
- 逆に、「四苦八苦する」みたいなニュアンスを伝える時は"struggle"を使う
相手を立てる（主導権を譲る、目立たないようにする）
- I don't hesitate to take a back seat to them.
「なんで英語を学ぶのか？」を聞かれて、「マジで理由がないから困る」って言うとき：
- That question always troubles me because there is no reason there. If I had to say, over billion people can speak English, so I wanna be a one of them.
  - If I had to say: 強いて言うなら

Typhoons hit Japan.
- Shizuoka city was hit especially hard.
A powerful typhoon barreled through Japan on Monday and Saturday, and it triggered floods and caused thousands to evacuate to safety.
- barrel: 疾走する、（車などを）ぶっとばす
It is said that the last typhoon was one of the strongest ever recorded.
